Several times a week, at the same time of day, I see these two border collies in the exact same position, here in the Holme Valley. One of them is always ‘standing up’ and leaning against the drystone wall to peer over. The other one just stands there, on the path, gawping upwards. They’re usually there for between 10 and 20 minutes, right next to the field of sheep and the field of highland cattle. Doing the same thing. Day in, day out.
I’ve often wondered what they’re chatting about. Perhaps they’re chewing over the fact that sheep aren’t as compliant as they used to be since Lockdown 1. Or maybe it’s more of a boundary dispute – a bit like people in Uppermill getting all hot and bothered because they actually want to be in Yorkshire and not in Lancashire.
Can animals be as petty as humans? I’ll go and ask my hens (currently fighting over a squashed banana).
